I can imagine this approach being alienating to some audiences, but personally, I found it to be captivating even when I couldn’t always understand what he was saying. He has to carry a sailor’s dialect that demands you to lean in so you can understand his intentions. By god, how does he not have an Oscar yet? His performance is absolutely remarkable, and his character is even more challenging than Pattinson’s. It’s exhilarating to watch, and he deserves as much Awards recognition as possible this season.īut so does Defoe.

There’s also an unexpected poignancy to his character that makes him relateable to anyone who’s ever had to work in a position where their mental stability takes a toll. For me, that’s the best kind of horror story–one that doesn’t require a jump scare to make you feel disturbed and unsettled. Horror films nowadays don’t require its actors to dive deep into the psychology of their characters, but in regards to films like THE WITCH, the actors find ways to dive head-on into their characters’ anxieties, to a point where the darkness of the characters ultimately consumes them. What I think doesn’t get as much attention regarding that film are the incredible performances found in its cast, led by the incomparable Ana Taylor-Joy. But when the four weeks are over, and they are still stranded with nowhere else to turn, a little bit of spoiler-filled craziness begins to take hold that would make someone like Jack Nicholson very proud.
